The Gentle Giant….Coming of age at Golden Jubilee…..

JIPMER traces its origin to 1823, as Ecole de Medicine de Pondicherry under French rule in Southern India.  In 1956 it was named Dhanvantari Medical College after de facto transfer of power from French colony to India.  Upgrading it to a Postgraduate Institute, it was renamed the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) in 1964 in honour of the first Prime Minister of India,  Shri Jawaharlal Nehru. JIPMER became an autonomous Institution of National Importance in July2008 by an Act of Parliament, only the third such Institute to be made so, under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.
