The Gentle Giant….Coming of age at Golden Jubilee…..

T S RavikumarJIPMER traces its origin to 1823, as Ecole de Medicine de Pondicherry under French rule in Southern India.  In 1956 it was named Dhanvantari Medical College after de facto transfer of power from French colony to India.  Upgrading it to a Postgraduate Institute, it was renamed the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) in 1964 in honour of the first Prime Minister of India, Shri Jawaharlal Nehru. JIPMER became an autonomous Institution of National Importance in July2008 by an Act of Parliament, only the third such Institute to be made so, under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.
VISION: JIPMER seeks to be a model for health systems in India through innovations in education, patients-oriented research, and population health and service excellence.
JIPMER is among one of the top Health Systems in India by a variety of polls. The medical college is ranked 3rd best in the country. The hospital is ranked 6th among the best multi-specialty hospitals in India. JIPMER is among the top ten in research strength, judged by Publications and peer reviewed funding.
With a Director at the helm as Chief Executive Officer, it is governed by a board (Institute Body/Governing Body) chaired by a President.  Located in the coastal town known for tourism, Pondicherry, JIPMER boasts a beautiful 195 acre campus hub, and urban/rural outreach community centers.  It has evolved into a vertically and horizontally integrated health system with a reputed medical school (ranked 3rd in India) and a robust research program encompassing basic, translational, and clinical and population research.  Funding is largely through Grants-In-Aid from Government of India, supplemented by research, academic and clinical revenues.
The medical school has 38 academic departments, staffed by about 230 faculty members.  A Nursing college, headed by Principal was started 5 years ago.  A total of 536 students enroll annually for 75 Courses encompassing medical (Under-graduate/Post-graduate, Ph.D) nursing (Basic, Post-graduate & Diploma) and Para-medical disciplines.  Both its faculty and students are recruited from a national pool on merit-cum-reservation basis.  The research enterprise is on a growth trajectory, with the peer reviewed external funding increasing tenfold 2012-13, with focus on patient oriented & translational research.   The hospital complex has 2059 beds, with about 6000 outpatient visits & 400 emergency room visits daily.  Each year, JIPMER has about 600,000 ‘unique patient touches’ and 99.5% of care is provided free of charge, catering to people below poverty line.  It runs a K thro’-12 School on campus, as well as a day care center.
The campus houses the Main Hospital, Super Specialty Block, Emergency/Trauma Care Centre, Regional Cancer Center, Out-Patient Block, Women& Children Hospital, Institute Block, Academic Complex, Central Library, Administrative Block, Student Hostel Complex, Faculty/Staff housing, K through 12 School, Post Office, Bank, Shopping arcade, Day and Night shelter for the poor, temple, recreational park, Community Hall and a large auditorium.
Its global diaspora of Alumni and collaborative efforts across many countries are part of JIPMER pride!  Plan for the next five years include: commissioning a School of Public Health (JISPH); Center for Patient Safety & Health Care Quality & Administration; Institute for Allied Health Sciences; Multi-disciplinary Advanced Research Center (MARC); &e-Learning Resource Center including Telemedicine, to name a few.
JIPMER, arguably, boasts itself as the highest “value”  health system in the country, in terms of quality education at the lowest cost, health care for the unreserved ameliorating out of pocket (OOP) expenditure, community benefit through a variety of social missions and patient oriented research of relevance to low/middle income countries. Folks gravitate to JIPMER with one common underpinning:  “To see the smile on the face of the poor’.  The twin strands of JIPMER DNA are – “Serving the underserved” and Finding new knowledge through research & education”.
On 2014, JIPMER is celebrating its Golden Jubilee. For sustaining its missions of serving the underserved and attaining preeminence in education and research internationally, a capital campaign has been launched to raise Rs.50 Crores for the 50th anniversary! Contributions may come in many ways: A preliminary list of proposed projects is developed, and more opportunities to contribute will be forthcoming. May it be for establishing Programs/Professorships/Fellowships/Scholarships or for creating centers of excellence or contribution towards the Green Campaign, or any other ideas that the donor may wish to support, such contributions mean a lot to sustain JIPMER’s growth trajectory.
