Of the forty nine crore children in India, fully one crore children are born with congenital problems that will need the expert skills and specialist services of a Pediatric Surgeon. Pediatric Surgery is a specialty that treats the surgical problems in children, infants and newborns. In addition to the problems that children are born with, there are additional acquired diseases and trauma in children that need the specialist skills of a Pediatric Surgeon.

Pediatric Surgery is an extremely demanding specialty which deals with complicated diseases in very small sized patients. In fact, some of the surgeries are performed in babies weighing less than half a kilogram and fitting into the palm of one’s hand. A small baby is not simply an adult on a smaller scale, and comes with his or her own unique set of problems.

Pediatric Surgery is a relatively young specialty in India, but the advances made in the last couple of decades have been enormous. There have been advances in the fields of laparoscopic surgery, thoracoscopic surgery and robotic surgery. Another area in which great strides have been made has been the field of organ transplants such as liver, kidney and intestine.

The Department of Pediatric Surgery at JIPMER started in 1976. There has been phenomenal growth since then and is now a department with a strong faculty and a busy super specialty postgraduate training program in Pediatric Surgery. The whole spectrum of surgical disorders is treated at JIPMER in the department of Pediatric Surgery. Thoracoscopic and laparoscopic surgery has been performed on very small infants.  Very complex newborn surgery is performed almost on a daily basis. Almost all the work done is charitable and the department caters to children predominantly from the poorest sections of society. The referrals come not only from Puducherry but also the surrounding states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Expert Pediatric Surgical Services are available 24/7, and referrals are seen from outside at any time.

Pediatric Surgeons need to keep abreast of the rapid increases in knowledge base. Newer diagnostic methods and technological advances appear on a regular basis and become relevant in the surgical care of patients. All of these have led to the improvement in surgical techniques available and has led to a vast improvement in the mortality and morbidity rates in Pediatric Surgery.

The annual conference of the Tamil Nadu and the Pondicherry Pediatric Surgeons (TPPS) aims to disseminate this knowledge, demonstrate newer surgical techniques and act as a forum for discussion of any topic relevant to the practice of Pediatric Surgery.  This is also a platform for young and budding surgeons and Pediatric Surgeons to interact with their more experienced peers and contribute to the knowledge base in Pediatric Surgery. TPPS, though a super specialty society, is unique in that it also promotes undergraduate medical students to participate and do research in Pediatric Surgery. TPPS gives the MBBS students an opportunity to present the results of their research at the annual conference, with prizes being awarded for the best papers.

POPSCON 2014 is the thirteenth annual conference of Tamilnadu and Pondicherry(TPPS) chapter of Indian association of pediatric surgeons. It is the largest state chapter and has about 150 pediatric surgeons as members. This year a live operative workshop has been organized at JIPMER,  with twin projections. An impressive list of complex cases has been lined up with an equally impressive and expert faculty from all over the country including Prof Ashley D’Cruz(Narayana Hrudayalaya)  from Bangalore, Prof Bhatnagar(AIIMS)  from New Delhi, Prof Mohan Abraham (Armita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi) and Prof Rajamani (Coimbatore Medical College), Prof Ashish Wakhlu from Lucknow.

There are about 44 papers to be presented in various sections of pediatric surgical oncology, pediatric urology, pediatric thoracic, pediatric GI sections, three panel discussions and two orations planned over  two and half days.
