“Transforming Public Health Education in India”

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW),Government of India entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) in 2013 where the two parties engaged and work collaboratively in improving public health education and leadership training.

Under this MOU, a collaboration between MoHFW, JIPMER AND HSPH and other Apex Institutions launched in JIPMER campus, at a retreat entitled. “Transforming Public Health Education in India”, during March 10-11th 2014- Shri C.K.Mishra, Additional Secretary, MoHFW inaugurated this conclave on March 10th ,2014 at 9 am at JIPMER Academic Centre. Dr.T.S.Ravikumar, Director of JIPMER and Coordinator of this retreat, welcomed the illustrious group, nearly 40 leaders from 20 different institutions across India. HSPH contingent was led by Prof David Hunter, Dean for Academic Affairs.

            The two days of brainstorming involved sharing of information of public health education programmes in India and abroad, discussion of  public health training for 21st century, networking across institutions for capacity building, demonstrations of online courses across the globe, practicum components and addressing barriers in building world class public education aligned with Universal Healthcare in India.

Shri C.K. Mishra, Additional Secretary, MoHFW emphasized the need to address critical gaps in Indian scenario in public health systems and practice and advised the group to plan collectively for capacity building for Public Health Schools.

Dr. T.S. Ravikumar, Director of JIPMER articulated the principle of addressing health as a “care continuum” and bridge the distinction between health care and public health, as the apex institutions across country implement more and more Public Health Schools and programmes.

Prof David Hunter and his team from Harvard School of Public Health that includes Prof Peter Berman, Prof Ian Lapp and Prof Richard Cash shared the information on Harvard modules in pedagogy and their collective global experience in health systems strengthening and on-line public health courses.

In keeping with the goals of this retreat, the meeting will identify critical gaps in public health education and practice, and develop adorable recommendations for multilevel and multilateral collaboration amongst stakeholders.
